BOOK REVIEW -RAW MATERIALS
FOR AN INDIAN THEOLOGY

Given the many religions and the various oppressions like poverty, caste, sexual discrimination and cultural fundamentalism, dialogue and liberation are key dimensions in Ishanand’s theologizing…. The liberation theologians of Latin America said the same thing when they insisted on the need for the option for the poor and commitment to liberate them as a condition for proper theologizing. Indian theology adds a more consciously spiritual dimension as a pre-condition for theologizing: mumukshatva or an earnest desire for mosha.

                                                                Fr. Michael Amaldoss, S.J.
                                                                (Loyola College, Chennai)

” This book is of a different sort. Given the pluralistic context of India it is not that easy to engage in a process of theologizing. As the title itself indicates and as the author confesses, this work is a “work-book” for theologizing in the Indian context rather than a neatly presented and tightly argued theological treatise giving the carefully considered theological conclusions of the author. He is offering a wide range of background materials for theologizing in the Indian context. Various chapters on inspirations in non-biblical scriptures, the Indian context through Phoolan Devi, the Ashram ethos, secularism and so on are bold proposals to be taken seriously in the Indian theologizing context. Hence it is an invitation for serious authors in the Indian theological circles to initiate a process of theologizing and come to their own conclusions. Given the understanding that theology is a religious and spiritual quest one needs to seriously look at the subjective content of this process of theologizing anew in the Indian context. Here is a novel attempt.”
